LAGOS, NIGERIA — The years of legislative experience and public service of Hon. Abiodun Mustainu Tobun, representing Epe Constituency I in the Lagos State House of Assembly, will come under the spotlight on October 3, 2026, as he is scheduled to receive two major recognitions at the Nigeria@66 Peace and Governance Leadership Conference.
The lawmaker has been nominated for the Leadership Excellence in Public Service Governance Award and the Outstanding Parliamentarian of the Year in State Legislature Award by the African Continental Chapter of the United Nations International Peace and Governance Council (UNIPGC-AFRICA).
The high-level conference is scheduled to take place at Four Points by Sheraton Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos, as part of activities marking Nigeria’s Independence.
The organizers say the conference is designed to provide a platform for dialogue on democratic governance, peacebuilding, leadership development and the strengthening of governance institutions in Nigeria.
A LEGISLATIVE CAREER SPANNING MORE THAN A DECADE
At the centre of Hon. Tobun’s nomination is his lengthy experience in the Lagos State House of Assembly.
First elected in 2011, Tobun is currently serving his fourth consecutive term, a record that has placed him among the more experienced members of the Lagos legislature.
According to proponents of the award, his years in the Assembly have given him extensive knowledge of parliamentary procedures, legislative processes and institutional operations.
His supporters describe the experience as one of the factors behind his nomination for the Outstanding Parliamentarian recognition.
INFRASTRUCTURE AND LEGISLATIVE OVERSIGHT
Infrastructure development has also featured prominently in the case made by proponents of the nomination.
During his tenure as Chairman of the House Committee on Works and Infrastructure, Tobun was involved in legislative oversight relating to public works and infrastructure development.
His legislative activities have included advocacy around the dualization of the Lekki-Epe Expressway, while motions attributed to him have also sought government intervention in addressing deteriorating roads across communities.
For his supporters, such interventions illustrate the importance of constituency-focused legislation and legislative oversight in addressing infrastructure challenges.
FROM THE PUBLIC SERVICE TO THE LEGISLATURE
Before entering elective politics, Hon. Tobun reportedly built experience within the public-service system.
He is identified by proponents as a former unionist and Deputy Director at the Local Government Service Commission, an experience they say exposed him to grassroots administration and the workings of government institutions.
That background has subsequently become part of the narrative surrounding his legislative career, particularly his engagement with local communities and constituency issues.
STEWARDING THE CONSTITUENCY
Beyond legislative chambers, community engagement has also been cited by the award organizers.
The proponents point to public stewardship engagements where issues concerning agriculture, education and local electricity infrastructure, among others, were reportedly discussed with constituents.
They also cite his willingness to receive public feedback and engage with criticism as part of the responsibilities of constituency representation.
RECOGNITION ON THE AFRICAN STAGE
The nomination also comes against the backdrop of another recognition received by the lawmaker earlier in 2026.
According to the award organizers, Tobun received the Africa Distinguished Service Award from the Rebranding Leadership Development in Africa Initiatives (RELEDA) on June 18, 2026.
The recognition has been referenced by his supporters as another indication of the attention his public-service career has attracted beyond Lagos.
A TRADITIONAL TITLE WITH COMMUNITY SIGNIFICANCE
Tobun’s relationship with the Epe community and traditional institutions has also featured in the profile presented by his supporters.
He has been conferred with the traditional title of Balogun of Epe Land, which proponents associate with his contributions to the physical and socioeconomic development of the Epe division.
A GATHERING OF GOVERNANCE LEADERS
The October 3 conference is expected to bring together public officials, political leaders, governance practitioners, traditional leaders, civil society representatives and other stakeholders.
Other personalities listed by the organizers for recognition include Hon. Oladeinde Diamond, Hon. Dr. Eedris Balogun and Alh. Chief Mrs. Mojisola Sanni, among other distinguished Nigerians.
For UNIPGC-AFRICA, the conference is intended to go beyond ceremonial recognition by creating a platform for conversations on the future of governance, peace and democratic development in Nigeria.
The recognition of Hon. Abiodun Tobun, according to the organizers, is therefore intended to spotlight a legislative career spanning more than a decade and encourage continued attention to effective representation, institutional accountability and grassroots development.
As Nigeria continues to mark another year of nationhood, the Nigeria@66 Peace and Governance Leadership Conference is positioned by its organizers as a gathering where leadership, governance and public service will take centre stage.
